The History of Sandwiches Around the World

From a simple idea in England to one of the world's most loved meals.

Few foods have travelled the world as successfully as the sandwich.

Simple, practical and endlessly creative, it has become part of everyday life in almost every country. Whether enjoyed as a quick lunch, a gourmet dinner or premium street food, the sandwich continues to evolve while keeping one thing unchanged: great ingredients between great bread.

Where did the sandwich begin?

The story begins in England during the 18th century.

According to tradition, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, asked for slices of roast meat to be served between two pieces of bread so he could continue playing cards without interrupting his game.

Soon others began ordering "the same as Sandwich," and the name remained forever.

Whether the story is completely true or partly legend, the sandwich quickly spread throughout Europe and later across the world.

A global food with endless variations

Every culture has created its own version.

Italy offers panini.

France is famous for the jambon-beurre.

Vietnam created the banh mi.

The United States transformed sandwiches into an art with deli classics, barbecue creations and iconic grilled sandwiches.

Around the world, local ingredients continue to inspire new interpretations every day.

Bread makes the difference

A truly memorable sandwich begins with excellent bread.

Freshly baked bread provides texture, aroma and structure, while balancing the flavors of every ingredient inside.

Whether it's sourdough, focaccia, brioche or rustic country bread, the bread is never just a container—it is part of the recipe itself.

The modern sandwich

Today's sandwich is far more than a convenient meal.

It combines slow cooking, artisan baking, carefully selected cheeses, homemade sauces and fresh vegetables.

Modern sandwich makers focus on craftsmanship rather than speed, creating meals that are satisfying, balanced and full of character.

The Chubbies philosophy

At Chubbies, we believe every sandwich deserves the same respect as any carefully prepared dish.

We prepare our meats slowly, build every sandwich by hand and focus on quality ingredients that allow simple recipes to stand out.

For us, the sandwich is not fast food.

It is fine street food.

Conclusion

From its humble beginnings in England to contemporary handmade creations served around the world, the sandwich has become one of the most universal foods ever created.

Its story continues to grow every day—and we are proud to be a small part of that tradition.
